Originally known as Mothering Sunday here in Ireland, Mother’s day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of lent (hence the different date each year!), It can be dated back to the early 1600s with the Christian tradition of returning to the “mother Church” during lent where families reunited for a special service. Children would pick wild flowers for their mothers and grandmothers on the way to mass. This tradition has remained strong in Ireland over the centuries, making Mother’s Day weekend the busiest of the year for most florists.

Even in Medieval times, Mothering Sunday was a day when all servants and labourers were allowed to return home to visit their mother and eat Simnel cake. The rich, fruity cake, covered in almond paste and Marzipan is still a firm favourite today, especially for Easter.
The earliest mention of Mother’s Day harks back to Ancient Greece, where during the spring festival, the Greeks would present their Mothers with bunches of flowers or grasses to decorate the table as they feasted in honour of Rhea, whom they considered the “Mother Goddess”.

Our American counterparts celebrate Mothers Day on the second Sunday in May. This is thanks to Anna Jarvis, who conceived the idea in the early 1900s following the death of her own mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, as a way to honour the sacrifices Mothers make for their Children. It has been a national holiday since 1914!
